and overnight at campsite
Day 09; 10; 11 Camel Trekking (Chalbi desert, Mount
Marsabit, Baragoi or Loiyangalani)
After a hot breakfast you set off through the bush. You may ride or walk,
the pace is slow and the camels can allow you to change whenever you wish.
Mattresses pad the locally made wooden frames on your camel. The pace is
relaxed and there is plenty of time to study the environment and take pictures
as you move along. There are only a few places where you might be forced
to stop due to washed out riverbeds. The camels are led by Samburu Morans
who will keep you informed of what you are seeing and of the culture of
the people you may meet. We find attractive and unexplored Oases and deep
wells perched on the edge of the Dida Galgalu plains. Here nomadic peoples
water their goats oblivious of the visitors. Eventually we find ourselves
at the Kalacha Oasis - a natural spring creating an incredible island of
life in one of the world's most inhospitable regions - Ostrich, Sand grouse,
Water birds, Jackals, and much more are seen here. On your arrival at camp
a shower awaits you [water permitting] and your cook will have afternoon
tea and snacks ready for you. The El Molo are the smallest ethnic group
in Kenya, numbering about 300 people. According to some historians, the
'pure' El Molo may number only forty. The rest being of combined Samburu
and Turkana blood. Later in the afternoon you may choose to go on a nature
walk with your Moran guides. Dinner and overnight at campsite.
Day
12 Yare Camel camp (home to Maralal International camel Derby)
Usually returning to our Club about midday, you are free to explore Maralal
town after lunch, or just relax around the camp. If you choose to visit
the town, your Moran guides will accompany you to add to the experience.
Before dusk the Samburu Morans and ladies will dance for you at the camp,
before dinner and overnight in our Bandas.
